How Do I Preserve a Cardboard Cigar Box?
My husband kept the box that held the "It’s a Boy" cigars in it from our first baby and now we’re having a girl and have a similar box of cigars all ready to pass out. I thought it was cute that he wants to keep the boxes, but I fear that because they’re not wooden that they’ll get ruined. Does anyone know how to preserve them? I thought about polyurathane, but didn’t know how that would work out. Has anyone had any luck sealing these style of boxes safely? Thanks so much!
My suggestion would be to go to a local cigar store and ask for an empty cigar box similar to yours. They throw them out anyway. Take it home and try polyurethane on one spot, varnish on another, etc. until you find the one that looks the best.
You can buy "Mod Podge" which is for decoupage, puzzle saver (in the toy department) or use a mix of 2/3 white "Elmer’s" glue to 1/3 water. Brush (sponge or bristle) on and let dry.
Or you could just save the tops/lids and put them in a frame under glass. This would be cute with a copy of the birth announcement or a copy of the birth certificate and maybe a picture. Have fun! and congratulations!
I like Grandmabird’s suggestion of framing the lids.
Besides decoupage, you could also try spraying on several light coats of gloss lacquer (like a Asian lacquered box).
Good luck
